Brunswick County CBAH Site - Northwest

Northwest CBAH SiteLocation: Northwest, Brunswick County

CDC Partner: Cape Fear Regional CDC

Land Trust Partner: Black Family Land Trust

Site Description: This 25-acre site is located in the unincorporated community of Northwest, about 20 minutes from downtown Wilmington. A former farm, the site is relatively flat and contains some wetlands.

Left to right: Bob Taylor (NCRCAP), James Knox (Mayor of Northwest), Stan Turner (Cape Fear CDC), Randall ArendtChallenges: Although Northwest is a small, unincorporated community, its proximity to Wilmington and the beach has put some development pressure on the community. Northwest is anxious for housing, especially affordable development. Access to a centralized sewer system is set to reach this site within the next two years, meaning that higher density development will soon become the norm in this part of the county. A model for development that contains high density dwellings while still preserving open space is needed in this community.

Arendt design for the siteSolution: Cape Fear Regional CDC enlisted the expertise of Randall Arendt to design a conservation plan for this site. Arendt’s design preserves open space and employs some unique design techniques (alleyways, rear-facing housing, etc.) that will make this a model community on the coast.

Project Spotlight
Resourceful Communities is working with partners to establish NC's first community forest on a 532-acre parcel in Hoke County.

Community forestry engages local partners in planning, management and stewardship. Adjacent to forestlands with the second largest US population of the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, this community forest will restore habitat, provide economic opportunities and more.
