Mission and Values

Mission

Resourceful Communities is a grassroots network that implements the “triple bottom line” in low-wealth communities by building capacity and a statewide movement that advocates for sustainable economic development, social justice, and environmental stewardship.

Values

Resourceful Communities believes that how we do our work is as important as the work we do. Therefore, we hold the following Core Values:

  • We believe that our triple bottom line vision of sustainable economic development, social justice, and environmental stewardship can happen.
  • We begin with a strengths-based approach to community, organizational, and personal growth.
  • We believe that developing capacity, building power, and increasing access are the keys to change.
  • We believe that our diverse partners and communities drive the mission of Resourceful Communities. Our strategies must be dynamic and responsive to the particular assets, needs, and requests of each community.
  • We believe in reflection and continuous learning. We engage our partners and ourselves in honest evaluation to celebrate victories, learn from experiences, and continue meeting challenges.
  • We believe in the power of intentional connection to build a movement for social change based on equity and trust. Recognizing that we have different power and privileges than our partners, we hold the door open to authentic relationships and social change by facilitating access to power and resources and challenging our peers to share power equitably.
  • We recognize that community-driven change takes time. To achieve this change, we accept that our work, by nature, is complex and messy. Despite the challenges, we persevere and make long-term investments in communities.
  • We value each other and ourselves. We believe that sustainability is possible only through the practice of self-care. We demonstrate our integrity by investing in our own capacity and care so that we can continue to be responsive to our partners and sustain the movement for change.

Project Spotlight

Resourceful Communities has helped partners establish NC's first community forest on a 532-acre parcel in Hoke County. Community forestry engages local partners in planning, management and stewardship. Adjacent to forestlands with the second largest US population of the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, this community forest will restore habitat and provide economic, recreational and educational opportunities and more.
