Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center

Stecoah Food Products Located in the North Carolina Mountains, Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center is housed in 1926 Stecoah Union School which was built with native rock by local residents. The Center offers more than 20 programs and serves more than 7,500 people each year.

Providing much-needed services to the area, facilities include visitor information, a library and computer center as well as space for other nonprofits (including Resourceful Communities partner, Smoky Mountain Native Plants Association). The old school cafeteria houses Stecoah Valley Food Ventures, a newly renovated kitchen and meeting facilities that support the development of food-related small businesses and provide space for community meetings and gatherings.

The Center is also home to the Artisans Gallery that features wares of more than 50 local and regional artists. The range of artistry is stunning – weaving, pottery, quilts, Cherokee artworks, and more. Events highlighting local music and food, such as the Appalachian Evening summer concert series, bring together community members throughout the year.

Its afterschool programs include the Junior Appalachian Musicians program which provides training on traditional instruments and helps preserve the area’s Appalachian musical heritage.

Project Spotlight

Resourceful Communities has helped partners establish NC's first community forest on a 532-acre parcel in Hoke County. Community forestry engages local partners in planning, management and stewardship. Adjacent to forestlands with the second largest US population of the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, this community forest will restore habitat and provide economic, recreational and educational opportunities and more.
